Here are the deets:

1. The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert

Throw me harsh shade for being an uber-geek if you want, but one of the best things I’ve done to hone my copywriting craft is copying down this guy’s letters, word-for-word, by hand.


And as un-thrilling as I know that sounds, you’d be surprised how much you learn by doing it. So whether you just use this book as passive inspirational reading on your office bookshelf, you go all-out and get nerdy with it like me, I can promise you reading his letters will give you all kinds of amazing “Aha!” moments in regards to writing conversion-focused copy.

2. Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

Sections of this book may or may not have been responsible for me all-out changing my philosophical beliefs. It’s that interesting.

I’ve even pushed off copies on people who say they aren’t interested in this kind of stuff, and all they want to talk about for three weeks after is how one study or another in this book totally shocked them. Yes, it’s a book of scientific psychological studies on human behavior, but it’s written really well.

(Like, my boyfriend’s currently reading through it as if it were a Harry Potter book. And you will too.)

3. Pre-Suasion by Robert Cialdini

Reading through this bad boy right now, and from Chapter 1 I was enthralled in what he has to say. The theories and ideas he presents are crucial to understanding not only good copywriting, but how to reverse-engineer it.

And I’m loving what I’m learning about combining emotions with first impressions. #GeekStatus


4. Trust Me I’m Lying by Ryan Holiday

Frustrated with bribes, and, shall we say, “fake news” as a result of one highly-paid person’s agenda, Holiday wrote this book to show how the world of media manipulation really works.

I haven’t added this book to the list so you can go out and start doing shady stuff. Instead, I think it’s incredibly interesting to know how virality really works, and to get ideas on doing it ethically.
