Finding a mentor.
Hiring a business coach.
You hear it everywhere.
It’s like it’s the chic thing that all the cool kids are doing, and if you’re not doing it, you’re not as cool as them. (And definitely don’t deserve the right to hang out in the same coffee shops.)
And this phenomenon has me a little perplexed.
All the “greats” of entrepreneurship talking about “their mentor” as if this magical person descended from the heavens who is basically Cinderella’s fairy godmother incarnate to give them all the perfect pieces of advice at all the right times.
And I’ve yet to find a fairy godmother, damn it.
Like, WHERE are they hiding?
And WHAT do I have to do to make them find me?
They say the teacher appears when the student is ready, and I don’t know how much more “ready” I can be.
I’ve got massive goals, and for some of them, have no f*ing clue how I’m going to make them happen.
Where’s my nice, motherly old lady to wave a magic wand and make all my dreams come true?!?
But, I digress.
The point of this post is not to complain that I can’t wave a magic wand and instantly have everything in life I’ve ever wanted.
The point of this post is to talk about making it all happen for yourself, and using the help of smart people to get there. (Yes, even if those people are not magical fairy godmothers.)
Because even if I don’t have my own personal fairy godmother, I DO have people I’ve learned a lot from over the years, and without whom I may not be as successful as I am today.
I look up to them all immensely, and honestly, want to grow up to be just like them.
Because I’ve never had the spare cash to drop on a $3,000+ on a 1:1 coaching and mentorship.
And I don’t think you need to have it to be successful in business, either.
Don’t get me wrong, I think these mentorships TOTALLY have their place, but I also don’t think they’re “required” for success.
Because what I’ve found out in my ~8 years of working for myself is this: Getting the help of “the greats” in the business world is often WAY more affordable than you’d imagine.
So what if you don’t have $3,000 to pay them to help you on a private phone call each week?
If they’re truly deserving of their “great” title, they’re in it to help everyone at every stage… which means most of them have more affordable options to get in on their help and expertise.
And over the years, I’ve been a shameless member of their inexpensive programs, and I don’t plan to ever stop being this way.
To give you an idea, here’s a list of my own “fairy godmother” mentors in business, who I paid small monthly fees for their help:
Carol Tice – Make a Living Writing
If you’ve ever tried to start a freelance writing business, you’ve come across this woman’s name.
She is NOTORIOUS for helping struggling freelance writers ditch the shitty-paying content mills, and to position themselves for (and to find) higher quality work and the pay that goes with it.
She writes everything in an easy-to-understand approach, and I read her blog religiously for years.
When she launched her Freelance Writer’s Den, I joined for $25 per month, and the content in there REALLY helped me take my freelancing game to the next level.
Michael Port – Book Yourself Solid
Michael Port is a former actor, and (I think) mostly famous in the entrepreneurial space for helping people become better public speakers.
However, he’s also got a book called Book Yourself Solid, and a monthly membership program of the same name, where he helps his students… you guessed it… book themselves solid.
His teachings were a big part of what got me to my first five-figure months, and I still practice some of them today.
I joined his monthly membership for $89 per month, and got to talk 1:1 with the AMAZING business coaches (and him!) that he’d recruited for the program multiple times per week in group calls.
This helped me get amazing clarity on what I was doing, and decide on actionable steps that would benefit me both at the moment and in the long-term.
Denise Duffield-Thomas – Money Bootcamp
Before her re-branding last year, Denise’s bootcamp was actually called “Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp.”
You CAN’T POSSIBLY guess how that name called out to my not-afraid-to-curse personality, can you?
I came across Denise’s free course on manifesting money in 24 hours, and honest to god, it helped me make about $3,000 within 48 hours to make up for what I lacked on a tax bill.
After that, I was hooked.
However, her only offering at the time was a $1,500 Money Bootcamp, and it was hard for me to justify that cost. But I bought both of her books for about $12 each, read them with pencil and highlighter in hand, and started setting money aside for her program.
When she did a launch that offered a 10-month payment plan, I signed up for $175 per month, and OH MY GOSH, her program worked.
I hit my highest income months yet after that first round of Bootcamp, and I’m still a student of it today.
Ramit Sethi – Zero to Lauch
Ramit’s name is a big one in the online business space, and rightfully so. He produces A TON of free, high-value content, and has become a master at launching effective online courses.
I knew I wanted to launch my own online course, but didn’t know HOW to do it all, so when he did a launch of ZTL, I joined.
I didn’t have the ~$2,000 upfront, so I paid $199 per month for 12 months. In that time, I researched, created, marketed, and launched my own online course.
Brennan Dunn – Double Your Freelancing
After I became “successful” in my niche, I started to get tired of juggling lots of clients at once.
Instead of working for 8 different people at a time, I wanted to work for 2-3 people at a time, but at a higher profit margin.
Brennan’s courses helped me figure out how to do that, and were SUPER practical. And it wasn’t expensive. I bought his courses on promo over Black Friday, and got them for a steal. But even without the promo, they’re only a few hundred dollars.
Harriette Hale – Priestess of Light
If I were to label one of these people as a fairy godmother, Harriette would be it.
She is actually a “Priestess of Light,” and works with light energy. (I know, I know, not everyone’s cup of tea. Don’t judge me if it’s not your thing.) But she is so energetically attuned that just a 5-10 minute conversation with her can sort me out in what I need to do with my business instantly.
I’m a member of her Member’s Club at ~$50-$55 per month (she charges in pounds, and her prices are now higher but still SO worth it), and I’ve gotten SO much value out of it.
I haven’t even hired her for 1:1 coaching yet, but I can’t wait to.
WHAT THEY’VE ALL TAUGHT ME
The things these people have taught me about business and making money are ALL OVER the place. I’ve learned so many different things and tactics from so many of them.
But there’s one thing they’ve all taught me that resonates higher than anything else: That teaching matters.
Spreading knowledge is important, and so is making it easily available at different price points.
I know not everyone can afford my copywriting services… they cost thousands of dollars.
And I know that for some people, especially people just starting their businesses, $197 for my Write a Better Website course can be a stretch.
But I’ve got this calling and drive inside me to help as many people as possible, and to help people grow their businesses in the same way these “fairy godmothers” have helped me over the years.
Which is why I launched Copy Queens, for only $47 per month.
In Copy Queens, each month you get:
